While CUPE members are pleased to see Bill 8 has been amended to exempt unions and collective agreements, concern about the threat of privatization remains.

The accountability sections of this legislation gives the Ontario government the power to reduce the budgets of hospitals, long term care facilities and community care agencies and force them into performance agreements. Budget cuts threaten care, opening the door further to calls for privatization.

CUPE members have mobilized across Ontario since the amendments were announced on March 9. Hospital locals met March 31 to discuss the campaign to protect support services, which are seen as the most at risk under Bill 8. Members will continue their call for amendments to the accountability provisions.
