Blue Summit: Workshop report-back

CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Claude Généreux and Council of Canadians National Water Campaigner Meera Karunananthan took on the job of reporting back to the plenary session about what had grown out of those meetings. The organization has more than 200 chapters across the province. Eau Secours president Martine Ouellet shared her vision for the next 10 years with the delegates at the Blue Summit. Blue Summit: Indigenous perspectives on the next 10 years

Jan 7, 2010 04:48 PM Take time to listen. That was one of the messages from Cree activist Darlene Sanderson to the Blue Summit closing plenary. Sanderson has listened to Indigenous elders as part of developing a curriculum for education for communities on traditional perspectives on water. She is involved in indigenous activism on water issues around the world and her talk describes how beliefs about water mix with water policy. Listen to her presentation here.

Community activist Steven Ogden recently triumphed in a victory in a 25 year battle to protect water under Ontario’s proposed dump site 41. National water campaigner Meera Karunananthan is working to inspire communities across Canada through the Blue Communities project. Shannon Biggs is a rights based campaigner with Global Exchange in the United States. These activists shared their strategies for engaging the community water activism. Listen to their stories here.

A panel of activists at the Blue Summit shared their success stories. Panelists included Anil Naidoo of the Blue Planet Project and the Council of Canadians, Al-hassan Adam, coordinator of the Africa Water Network, CUPE researcher Shelly Gordon, and Council of Canadians director of organizing Carleen Pickard. Dec 22, 2009 12:54 PM First Nations suffer disproportionately from poor water quality and inadequate water and sewage treatment systems. Irving Leblanc is the special advisor on water for the Assembly of First Nations, and acting director for housing and infrastructure for the assembly. Dec 21, 2009 02:43 PM Canada must not repeat history when it comes to water privatization, says CUPE researcher Blair Redlin. Our country’s first water and sewage systems were founded in the wake of widespread public health problems in the late 1800s .These services were initially privatized, but were taken over by governments when they failed to deliver. Redlin has been involved in many campaigns fighting water and wastewater privatization. Blue Summit panel moderator Morna Ballantyne asked him to reflect on the state of public water systems – and the threat of privatization - across the country today. Hear his answer here.

Blue Summit: Canada needs a federal water policy

Dec 18, 2009 09:19 PM Canada is in a state of confusion and gridlock when it comes to protecting water resources, says Ralph Pentland. Pentland is the acting chair of the Canadian water issues council at the University of Toronto. He has worked on water issues, both in Canada and internationally, for more than 30 years. As part of his work, he helped develop a federal water policy. Panel moderator Morna Ballantyne kicked off the Blue Summit's first plenary discussion by asking Pentland what governments have done - and must do - to protect water.
