When CUPE 2403 - Dawson Creek civic, regional district and library workers - supported their community by sponsoring the Dawson Creek Canucks, they had no idea the CUPE name would be visible in Rogers Arena at a recent Canucks game.

The Dawson Creek Canucks were on their way to the five-day Pee Wee Tier 3 Provincials Hockey Tournament in Campbell River. The team took an extra day and enjoyed a tour of Rogers Arena that included the Canucks dressing room. They cheered on their namesake Vancouver Canucks through an exciting game against the Phoenix Coyotes.

CUPE 2403 president Bea Rutledge says that they’ve sponsored the team for almost ten years. “We’re a hockey community and this is a good way to get CUPE’s name out there.”

Team mothers at the game expressed their appreciation of CUPE’s support for the Pee Wee team.

Sponsoring local sports teams is one of many ways that CUPE locals participate in building strong communities throughout B.C.

I hope the tournament is successful,” says Rutledge. “We wish everyone the best of luck.”
