1976 CLC - Gil LevineLast week, the campaign to get rid of Harper gained a catchy musical soundtrack – and it connects to CUPE. Harperman was written for Gil’s Hootenanny, an annual May 1 event with the theme of Songs of Protest, Songs of Hope. The hootenanny honours the memory of our own Gil Levine, CUPE’s first director of research, who passed away in 2009. Gil was a lifelong lover and supporter of folk music – he believed that music could change the world.

You can read more about Gil here.

The Ottawa-based singer songwriter who wrote the song, Tony Turner, has been suspended as part of Stephen Harper’s efforts to muzzle federal government employees. He is being represented by his union, PIPSC.

Of course, we don’t think getting rid of Stephen Harper is enough for public sector workers. We need a government that supports public health care, education, municipalities, and fairness. And that means voting for Tom Mulcair and the NDP!

Support Tony – and help elect our first NDP federal government – by joining in the cross country Harperman singalong on September 17 (harperman.ca)

As the song says, Harperman it’s time for you to go!
