FREDERICTON, N.B.About 2,000 CUPE transportation and general workers have voted to take strike action, if needed, to support currently stalled negotiations with the provincial government.

“Our members stood up and voted unanimously to give their negotiating team a strong mandate to get a fair collective agreement even if it means going on strike,” said Tom Steep, elected president at the 31st annual meeting of Local 1190 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

“We have not been on strike in 30 years,” Steep said. “But the Lord government and its recent budget have got my members fighting mad.”
