BIGGAR: The union representing striking support workers in the Biggar Public School Division announced today that contract negotiations have been adjourned until August 19 at 6:00 p.m.

“Over the past three days of negotiations, the union and the Board have made significant progress towards reaching a collective agreement,” said Penny McCallum, a spokesperson for CUPE Local 2128.

Negotiations between the union and the Division Board resumed on August 12 after several months with no talks.

“We’re cautiously optimistic that we’ll soon be able to reach an agreement so our members can return to work in time for the beginning of the new school year,” said McCallum.

The 46 teaching and library assistants, secretaries and caretakers began their strike on February 4.

The school employees work in the communities of Biggar, Cando, Sonningdale, Handel, Landis and three Hutterite colonies.
