Civic workers in Kingston took strike action September 17, bringing transit and other municipal services to a halt. Workers walked after municipal officials confirmed they werent willing to continue negotiations through the weekend.

CUPE 109 represents 460 civic employees, including inside, outside and transit workers. Theyre facing demands for concessions at the bargaining table as they try to negotiate a first contract. Without a wage hike since 1992, the local is demanding harmonization and an increase in wages, rejecting demands for changes to hours of work, benefits and hiring procedures.

City Council is holding a special closed door meeting tonight to reconsider its position.
