With the provincial election results now in, CUPE Ontario is renewing its call for the newly elected government to chart a different course and commit to building the Ontario we deserve.
“This isn’t the result we wanted given the terrible track record of the Ford Conservatives, and, frankly, a lot of us are really concerned about what else is in store,” said Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario. “But I also want to be really clear that members of CUPE Ontario will never stop fighting against cuts to public services, privatization, and the redistribution of public money into the pocket of big business. And if this new government wants to show they are actually committed to “working for workers”, they must immediately recall the legislature to repeal Bill 124 and reverse their proposed budget cuts, including $1.3 billion in public education that have resulted in hundreds of education workers being given lay off notices.”
“The track record of the Ford Conservatives has been a disaster. The people who were hardest hit by their habit of prioritizing profits over people were women, newcomers, and racialized people,” said Yolanda McClean, Secretary-Treasurer of CUPE Ontario. “Our communities know how important and urgent it is to keep pushing, to finally build the Ontario we deserve. We’re worried about our future, for sure, but the election results won’t keep us from fighting for a better world.”
