A vigorous member-driven campaign that included letter writing, face-to-face discussions with residents, leaflet deliveries and a short media campaign resulted in a big win for CUPE members in White Rock BC when city council voted unanimously to reject a management proposal to contract out garbage pick-up. One city councillor said that council could not remember the last time so many people made their opinions heard on an issue. She called it a “real tribute for the gentlemen who work for the city.”

Bruce Wormald, unit chair of Local 401-02 said, “the members were clear that the loss of one good job or service in our community would just lead to more losses. They worked hard to win this campaign.”
