Laval University is unfair in its treatment of staff whose main responsibilities involve administrative duties and maintenance of the university’s buildings and grounds.

On June 6, inspite of the rain, some 500 members of the administrative and support staff at Laval University turned out to call for justice and equity from their employer. The staff at Laval University are the only employees who have not received the same salary settlement as those made in the public and parapublic sector in 1999, that is 1.5% retroactively, 2.5%, 2.5% and 2.5%. After almost three years of waiting and dickering, the 1,600 members represented by the SEUL-CUPE 2500 have been patient long enough!

As Michel Bourassa, union vice-president and spokesperson pointed out, “Respect is not won through grievances, it is earned by treating employees with consideration and equity”. Mr. Bourassa continued by stating that the union will never abandon its struggle for justice. Mr. Claude Ht0075, assistant director for CUPE-Qub0065c, repeated this commitment. “Mr. Tavenas must comply with this demand; CUPE does not intend to stand idly by in the face of this inequity”, he added.
