Prescription drug coverage is a critical component – and often the most-used component – of workplace benefits plans. CUPE has just updated our fact sheet on drug plans in collective agreements to better equip members and locals to defend this critical health coverage. When employers demand cuts, our goal is to prevent the erosion of benefits to members and ensure all members have access to the medications they need.

As we turn the calendar page to welcome the New Year, it’s an opportune time to set our sights on the work that paves the road ahead of us. I kicked off 2025 by addressing staff in their respective regions, alongside National Secretary-Treasurer Candace Rennick, to express our heartfelt thanks for their invaluable contributions over the past year, and to share our vision of what’s to come.

Excitement is building up in anticipation of our 31st National Convention in October. The last quarter has therefore largely been focused on preparing to welcome CUPE delegates to beautiful Quebec City on October 23 to 27. As this will be our first in-person convention since 2019, we are preparing for a dynamic event that will showcase the incredible work that has been done over the last two years, gather delegates’ inputs in developing our orientations for the next two years, and celebrate CUPE’s 60th anniversary.

Our September National Executive Board meeting marks 18 months into the global pandemic. As is the case for unions across the world, CUPE continues to face and deal with serious challenges.

When this report is presented to the National Executive Board in September, our 29th CUPE National Convention will be just two weeks away. We anticipate welcoming over 2,000 delegates from every region across the country to the beautiful city of Montréal. Significant convention preparation has been underway throughout 2019 with considerable effort dedicated by staff and leadership. Preparations include pre-convention sector meetings and caucuses as well as forums on a variety of priority areas.

It’s already that time of year when we discuss how to allocate funds for the upcoming year to maximize our impact in CUPE-represented workplaces and communities across the country, as well as with our partners and allies around the world. I’m excited to bring forward a budget that will leverage the successes of 2024 and lay the groundwork for a strong and impactful year ahead.
