It has been six months since the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic; since that time, all aspects of our lives – whether work, social or community – have been altered in ways most of us could never have imagined.We face new challenges around every corner.

It’s already that time of year when we discuss how to allocate funds for the upcoming year to maximize our impact in CUPE-represented workplaces and communities across the country, as well as with our partners and allies around the world. I’m excited to bring forward a budget that will leverage the successes of 2024 and lay the groundwork for a strong and impactful year ahead.

It is pretty surreal to try and put into words just how much has changed since my last report to you in March – and just how much work our union has done to address those changes in the last three months.

With all of the challenges you are facing, I want to thank you for making the time to participate in CUPE’s 30th constitutional convention last month. And I want to thank you for the trust and confidence you have shown me with your support for my re-election as your National President. I am honoured and humbled to continue to serve our 700,000 members from coast to coast to coast.

This report comes just a few weeks after our national convention, and I want to begin by expressing my heartfelt thanks to all CUPE delegates and members across the country for their continued support. It is an incredible honour and privilege to represent CUPE’s 800,000 members. As I begin my third mandate as your National Secretary-Treasurer, I do so with renewed energy and determination to continue supporting the members of this great union, because we are worth everything we are fighting for, and so much more.

As summer comes to an end, I hope you were able to take some time to relax and reconnect with family and friends, and set aside for at least a moment the many challenges we face. Because it is going to be a busy fall for CUPE members, activists, leaders, and staff. The impacts of the global pandemic, now 31 months old, continue to affect our workplaces, our communities, the economy, and the political landscape.

Since my last report in March, CUPE members across the country have continued to rise to the challenges as we slowly recover from the global pandemic and the impact it has had on our communities, our workplaces, and our union.

Budget 2024 makes small tweaks to address big issues facing the country. Many of the changes announced are moving in the right direction, but some still reflect an over-reliance on market-led approaches that have failed in the past. There are also some promising proposals that will need more details before we can fully evaluate them.

The National President’s Report outlines the political work and campaigns undertaken by CUPE, regionally, nationally and globally. The report also provides an update on current CUPE strikes and lockouts, and newly organized locals.
