School Board support staff from across Ontario recently made a sizeable donation to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). CUPE Ontario education workers from across the province raised the money at the Ontario School Board Coordinating Committee conference held in Ottawa in March. A silent auction and other fundraising activities netted the organizing committee more than $2,500.

The Social Committee, comprised of Area 7 Local presidents, determined the proceeds would go to CHEO in recognition of the services it provides to children throughout Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley and beyond.

The money raised has been earmarked for the play areas in the hospital. The committee hopes that the funds will help purchase toys, books and other instructional aids to help children who are forced to spend time in hospital.

In the words of Social Committee Chair and Local 5678 President, Susan Hanson, “Our goal is to support students by whatever means possible. The supplies for the play rooms that this money can purchase will continue to enhance the educational and learning needs of students who are not able to be in a classroom for a period of time”.
