On strike since February 1, TIRU (Canada) Inc.’s 50 employees are all on the job as though it were business as usual. TIRU is responsible for operating a municipal household waste incinerator and a sludge treatment plant for the City of Qub0065c.

While all the members of CUPE Local 1754 are designated essential, the local has managed to convince the Essential Services Council that the number of ovens in operation should be reduced. As a result, a portion of the domestic waste must be sent to landfill sites, with the City assuming the additional cost. That way, the union can still apply some economic pressure on the employer even if workers are on the job.

The main issue in dispute is the use of the pension surplus.
