Oshawas pro-P3 mayor heard from more than 100 people at a public meeting called this week to talk about the southwestern Ontario towns proposed P3 arena.

CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan, who lives in nearby Whitby, warned that the P3 model would rip off the taxpayers.

“If it’s so lucrative to build one of these things, then let private enterprise do it on their own, he said.

The man who first proposed the arena says the project has become too expensive.

Bruce Wood, who chairs the Downtown Sports and Entertainment Complex committee said the proposed public-private plan could cost city taxpayers $200 million more than if the city just borrowed the money itself.

Other speakers argued that the new facility was badly located and that no one knows how much the arena will cost.

Oshawa city council makes its decision Feb. 16.
