Federal and provincial governments used to contribute 80% of the total funding for colleges and universities.
Can you believe it?
Today, the picture looks very different. The government barely contributes 50%. Instead, they rely on international students to cover the cost with astronomical tuition fees (as much as 5 times higher than domestic student fees). With the federal government clawing back study permits, that band-aid solution is no longer working.
Campuses and programs are shutting down. Workers are being laid off. Students are being left behind. The post-secondary education system is fighting a losing battle.
That’s why we’re demanding the federal government to step in — before it’s too late. With proper short- and long-term solutions, we can save crucial jobs and workers, attract new residents and workers to our communities, protect and retrain workers who’ve been impacted by Trump’s tariffs, and ensure our colleges and universities are accessible to all.
Support is growing. Add your name to our urgent call for the federal government to:
-
Provide direct funding for universities and colleges that are undergoing significant financial hardship.
-
Protect public sector jobs from layoffs, cutbacks, and program closures.
-
Implement a Post-Secondary Education Strategy that:
-
Develops a federal Post-Secondary Education Act to establish statutory federal funding for post-secondary education institutions;
-
Eliminates tuition fees for domestic and international students by working with provincial and territorial governments to ensure comprehensive public funding for post-secondary education institutions;
-
Supports post-secondary education workers in facilitating research, development, and training in the public interest.
