We are the strength that keeps our students moving forward. We support healthy and productive learning environments for over 27,000 students across 77 schools in the UCDSB.
We love supporting the children in our schools and believe that every student deserves the right to a safe education, but unfortunately every day your children’s’ learning environments are frequently disrupted by violent incidents, which has created an environment that is far from conducive to providing the highest quality of education.
Recruitment and retention of education workers is a major issue at the UCDSB. The board is hiring unqualified emergency workers who don’t have the appropriate training or education to work the jobs of EAs or RECEs because they can’t find trained workers for those roles. Our members often end up taking work home with them, or stay late, unpaid, because they only work 6.75 hours a day. Almost 90 percent of CUPE 5678 members say they’re stressed out due to overwork, and over 50 percent have had to take time off of work due to stress and burnout because of their excessive workloads.
Students at UCDSB desperately need more supports, which requires the UCDSB to hire hundreds more support staff TODAY!
