CUPE members in Black River-Matheson, Ontario have been on strike after their employer tried to force a contract on them. These workers are fighting for the next generation of municipal workers, refusing to accept a contract that wasn’t negotiated in good faith. They have been subject to disgraceful treatment from the mayor and council of Black River-Matheson, who have barred them as well as all CUPE members and staff from municipal buildings, hired scabs to do their work, and even threatened to have them arrested for exercising their legal right to strike.
This small but mighty local needs our support. Take a moment to send a letter to the mayor and council in Black River-Matheson to remind them that CUPE isn’t just a few people in a warming shed; it’s over 740,000 workers from all over the country, and we are watching. An injury to one is an injury to all. Tell Mayor Bender and the municipal councillors to get back to the bargaining table now.
Solidarity means standing up for each other, no matter what division or sector we are in. By flooding the municipal council in Black River – Matheson with letters from across the country, CUPE members can send a message to all our employers, that we are willing to stand together to protect our rights. We are stronger when we stand together. Show your solidarity today.
