Workers in Lévis, Quebec will soon walk off the job. Some 550 blue-collar employees, members of CUPE Local 2334, are planning a 24-hour strike beginning Friday, January 14. Both the union and the municipality have already agreed on the essential services to be maintained for the public.
“We need to get our message across to municipal leaders,” stated CUPE Local 2334 president Gérard Poirier. “We have been without a labour contract for more than three years and despite participating in dozens of negotiations, we are still empty-handed. Our members are fed up! We will continue to increase pressure until we get a satisfactory agreement.”
The blue-collar workers’ contract expired December 31, 2007.
The unionized members voted 99 per cent in favour of giving their negotiating committee a strike mandate, at a general meeting last fall. Talks are ongoing.
