TORONTO – Toronto Civic Employees Union, Local 416-CUPE, is recommending a tentative settlement signed today with Toronto Community Housing (TCHC), on behalf of 650 Toronto Housing workers.
“This can be seen as a minor miracle in the world of collective bargaining,” said Brian Cochrane, president of the Toronto Civic Employees Union, Local 416-CUPE. “This is our first tentative agreement with housing and we reached it at the bargaining table, without assistance from a conciliation officer.” Local 416 represents 9,500 members in the Greater Toronto Area, including city outside workers and library workers, as well as 650 members at TCHC.
“We are very pleased to have concluded this round of bargaining in an atmosphere of mutual respect,” said Cochrane. “The parties understood the importance of fashioning an agreement that was negotiated without any outside assistance.”
The tentative agreement will be presented to members for ratification over the next two weeks. “We are recommending this settlement, and we believe our members will endorse it,” said Cochrane.
