Montra006c, Monday, February 3, 2003 The President of the union representing Air Transat flight attendants and Vice-President of CUPE-Qub0065c, Lucie Leduc, was appalled by Mario Dumont’s comments concerning “stewardesses” and their work. In this morning’s issue of the daily newspaper, Le Devoir cited remarks made by the leader of the ADQ who was belabouring Frano0069s Legault, the current Health Minister, previously with Air Transat. Referring to Minister Legault as an aviation specialist, the ADQ leader said that “for many years, he had directed airline stewardesses, for whom it is quite normal to wander through the corridors”.
“It’s been a long time since we stopped using the term stewardess,” said Lucie Leduc, who went on to say that “Mr. Dumont seems to have a rather limited knowledge of the work performed by flight attendants”. She pointed out that cabin personnel is first and foremost trained to ensure the passengers’ safety, “they are airline safety professional and not, as Mario Dumont believes, persons who wander through the corridors.”
In Qub0065c, CUPE represents some 2,000 members in air transportation, about 380 of whom are with Air Transat. In addition, CUPE is active in 10 other sectors of activity in Qub0065c including health and social services, education, municipalities, provincial corporations and public organizations, hydroelectricity, urban transportation and communications. With close to 100 000 members in Qub0065c, it is the largest FTQ affiliate.
