CUPE is warning the Prime Minister he and his government have a major accountability deficit when it comes to public health care.
National President Judy Darcy delivered that message in a letter to Prime Minister Chrt0069en January 16.
“Not one penny of public health spending should go to profits. Governments must be held to account for all health care spending and that simply isn’t happening now. Instead, tax dollars are being diverted from care into corporate pockets,” says Darcy.
“While the Prime Minister may be satisfied with how provinces are spending health care dollars, Canadians have serious concerns. Talk of transparency and accountability must be backed with action and enforcement. That will take strong measures that set rules for health care delivery,” says Darcy, who outlines key accountability measures in her letter.
Darcy’s letter also calls for the First Ministers meeting to be open to media and the public. The full text of the letter can be found at cupe.ca.
CUPE is pushing for a strong, accountable public health care system. As part of the campaign, CUPE is also spearheading a court challenge against the federal minister of health, accusing her of failing to ensure that provinces follow the Canada Health Act’s rules.
