A brief lunch hour rally, involving more than 500 health care workers and their supporters, marched through Vancouver General Hospital’s cafeteria and administration area Wednesday to protest the privatization of laundry, housekeeping and security services.
The impressive turnout of HEU workers was bolstered by members of other unions and community groups who are demanding an immediate halt to the contracting out of critical hospital support services.
The rally sets the stage for what is expected to be a massive public demonstration January 15 when health care workers will march from the hospital to the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority’s corporate offices to deliver “Keep housekeeping in house” petitions.
