Hamilton Public hearings on the City of Hamilton’s budget are a farce and CUPE 5167 members will be in the council chambers tomorrow to let council know it, said President Gus Oliveira.
Management met last week with some groups of municipal workers to tell them that decisions have already been made to institute service reductions and job cuts, Oliveira said. But members of the public won’t even have a chance to make their views known to council until later this week.
“City councillors need to know that senior bureaucrats have already made these decisions, even though council has not yet decided on the budget,” Oliveira said. “Our members will be there to tell council to take back control, tell the public what cuts are really on the table, and listen to what the community has to say.”
CUPE 5167 will be in the public gallery at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2003, to bring their message to council.
