Effective the March 1999 per capita payment to CUPE National, a special levy of .04% will apply. This special levy will be contributed directly to the National Defence Fund.

This special levy is required by the CUPE Constitution because the balance in the National Defence Fund has fallen below $5 million. The special levy will continue until the balance in the Defence Fund increases to $10 million.

Commencing with the per capita payment for the month of March 1999 and until further notice, secretary-treasurers are asked to prepare per capita calculations on the basis of .89% of the regular monthly wages paid to members of the Local.

For locals taking advantage of direct remittance, CUPE National will automatically include the special levy in the calculation of the per capita owing, returning the balance of the dues directly to the local.

With this special levy, the total portion of your per capita directed to the National Defence Fund increases by 45% to .125% of regular monthly wages.

To answer your questions and respond to inquiries from members, the attached information has been prepared. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact your national staff representative.

If you have questions about the calculation of the special levy, please consult the Secretary-Treasurers’ Help Line at 1-800-363-CUPE or contact Cam Masse, Acting Managing Director of Finance and Administration at cmasse@cupe.ca.
