Petition body
Dear Dr. Woolf: The Queen’s University community is fortunate to count among its members people who work hard to make a valuable contribution to campus life. These efforts are in evidence every day among Queen’s trades and maintenance staff; lab and other technicians; library technicians; and food services workers. Unfortunately, the value of their contribution to campus life isn’t reflected in the university’s approach to them and their work. It has come to my attention that the pensions of these workers are under attack; their workplace now includes two-tier wage rates; and they are being asked to accept more casual and contract workers at Queen’s. I am disappointed in this attitude toward labour relations by Queen’s administration: it hurts workers, lowers the quality services at Queen’s and harms the wider Kingston community, which needs good, stable jobs to prosper. I recognize that chronic underfunding for Ontario’s universities is at the heart of this move by Queen’s administration. However, shortchanging dedicated workers is not a fair or far-sighted way of dealing with the problem. I urge Queen’s to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents these workers, in lobbying the provincial government for better funding for higher education in Ontario. I am counting on Queen’s to do the right thing.
