Manitoba’s largest municipal labour union released five key priorities for the upcoming civic election and is launching a major public awareness campaign to engage Winnipeggers in issues that matter.
“Our campaign is telling council candidates and the mayor to make life better for working Winnipeg families,” said Gord Delbridge, President of CUPE 500. “We want to make sure the message is loud and impactful–Winnipeggers should expect to see our message across the city through a significant public awareness campaign, and we really want Winnipeggers to participate.”
The plan calls for city councillors to commit to five priorities in the upcoming election:
- To give our economy a booster shot by buying local;
- To make our neighborhoods safer by bringing in a mental health support team as part of a fourth branch of 911;
- To build the North End sewage treatment plant and complete the separation of wastewater and stormwater systems to protect Lake Winnipeg;
- To increase public safety with more community safety officers and neighborhood action teams; and
- To introduce a public composting system to help Winnipeg reduce waste and keep our community looking great.
It’s important to have a progressive vision for what the next four years in Winnipeg can look like by being really specific and creative in our asks,” said Delbridge. “We want to be able to ask council candidates, ‘What is your vision, does it line up with what working-class Winnipeg families want from their city, and will you commit to these specific fixes that will make our community better?’”
CUPE Local 500 is investing significant resources into this campaign in full compliance with any third-party election financing rules.
