Minute of silence to be held for Victoria Salvan, the first patient attendant to die from COVID-19

At 2 pm this Friday, April 24, workers at the Grace Dart CHSLD will hold a minute of silence to pay tribute to their colleague who passed away from COVID-19 exactly one week ago. Victoria Salvan had 28 years’ experience and had been redoubling her efforts since the start of the health crisis to take care of residents in her CHSLD.

“We will also invite all of our members in the CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal to join our colleagues at Grace Dart. We need to come together at this moment, as we are going through a very difficult time and it’s not over. Victoria Salvan gave her life to her work. We’ll never forget her,” said Jonathan Deschamps, President of CUPE 2881.

A larger movement

CUPE represents 25,000 employees in the health and social services system. They come under the Conseil provincial du secteur des affaires sociales (CPAS).

“We invite all of our members throughout the province to pause for a moment this Friday to commemorate the unfortunate passing of Victoria Salvan. We also wish to take this opportunity to salute the superhuman efforts made by all of the health-care workers. Their vocation is a source of pride,” added Frédéric Brisson, President of the CPAS.

“In addition to this moment of silence, we have created an image for social media, which is available on the CUPE-Quebec Facebook page. Since we cannot get together for a formal commemoration, for the time being, we will do it virtually,” said Jonathan Deschamps.
