Forty-seven employees of Wood Buffalo housing in Fort McMurray, Alberta, have voted 82.5 per cent in favour of joining the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

The employees are the latest employees of Wood Buffalo housing to join the union in recent months. Earlier this year, CUPE successfully organized employees at Rotary House and Marshall House. About 95 per cent of the agency’s employees voted to join CUPE.

CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts credited a two-pronged approach to signing up new members in the public sector.

CUPE’s organizing success comes from our commitment to get better wages and working conditions for our members, and our passion for promoting the value of public services,” said Roberts.
