Supporters of health care privatization often quote the United Kingdom as a shining example of the successes of “market mechanisms” in health care. They say privatization improves quality, reduces costs and also reduces wait times. But these are all myths.

In October 2010, CUPE held a national health sector meeting in Victoria. The keynote speaker, Frank Dobson, a British MP and former Labour government secretary of health delivered a hard-hitting critique of privatization in the U.K.
