CUPE shares in the disappointment and the anger being felt around the globe today following the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States.

Donald Trump is a true threat to global peace and democracy. His re-election will have devastating effects on the fight against the climate crisis. His presidency will be a disaster not just for the United States, but for the entire world.

But we must not give up. Far-right attacks on our institutions, our hard-won rights, and our public services are relentless. We must be even more unrelenting in our defense of our rights, and in our pursuit of a better world - and we will be.

That begins with recognizing similar threats here at home. Like Trump, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre threatens the rights of workers, women, racialized people, and so many more. We have already seen him use Trumpian tactics to stoke divisions in Canada. Given the opportunity, Poilievre will take a wrecking ball to our public services and our hard-fought rights and freedoms. We must work with our allies to ensure he never gets the chance.

CUPE extends our solidarity to all our allies in the US and around the world in this unsettling moment, and we pledge our full support in the fights that lie ahead.
