The CUPE district council in Ottawa is calling on elected officials to hold public hearings before going ahead with any public private partnerships.

We are very concerned that council is not receiving the full story or considering the full range of issues surrounding P3s, says Ottawa CUPE district council president Steve Sanderson. Councillors have been presented with a very rosy picture and need to be aware of potential risks and disadvantages.

The CUPE council delivered a report exposing the potential pitfalls of proposed P3s after making a presentation to municipal officials.

Ottawa is considering four P3 projects including ice surfaces and recreational facilities, a long-term care centre, and an emergency medical services facility.

P3s are one big step toward privatization of public services, says CUPE council member Shellie Bird. Theyre just another way of contracting out public services.
