HALIFAX – A striking Halifax Water picketer has been hit by an Irving-owned truck and taken by ambulance to the Cobequid Centre.
CUPE National Rep. Naomi Stewart says, “One of our picketers at the Mill Cove facility in Bedford, Stephen MacRae, was legally picketing and walking in a line with several other employees when a RST tanker truck from St. John, NB drove through the line with no notice whatsoever striking him.
“The truck hit him and spun him around. When he raised his arm to protect his face, he was hit in his left wrist, where he had a previous injury. He is currently being assessed to find out if he will have to have surgery on his arm and wrist,” says Stewart.
CUPE says MacRae will be pressing charges against the driver, RST and Irving. He has also contacted his lawyer and will be pursuing legal action against Halifax Water and the security company that was on site at the time of the incident and stood by as it happened.
Halifax Water has hired RST to provide reinforcement for the removal of sewage sludge from the wastewater treatment plants.
