CORNWALL Claude Gnreux, National Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will meet and speak with local hospital workers at a hospital worker appreciation barbecue on Monday, at 12:00 noon (12:00 to 1:00 pm), at the Hotel Dieu site of the Cornwall Community Hospital. Following the barbecue, Gnreux will also visit hospital workers at the Second Street Site of the hospital at 1:00 pm. (1:00 pm to 2:00 pm). Gnreux a former health care worker, is also a past president of the Quebec Division of CUPE. He is currently serving his second term as National Secretary-Treasurer.

On May 20, 2004, Cornwall Community hospital workers will vote to choose the union that will represent them following the hospitals merger. Now, the service and office-clerical workers are represented by CUPE and OPSEU at different sites of the hospital. Under Bill 136, the Ontario Labour Board orders union representation votes following hospital mergers, to determine which union will represent workers where there was more than one union before the merger.

CUPE represents 30,000 hospital support, service and clerical employees in 100 bargaining units across Ontario.
