To our sisters and brothers in the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and the National Education and Allied Health Workers Union (NEHAWU) we offer our deepest condolences and a message of solidarity.

Nelson Mandela’s principles and refusal to accept the apartheid regime saw him jailed for 27 years.  Upon his release and ascension to President of South Africa he advocated for forgiveness and reconciliation with his people’s oppressors. This, perhaps amongst all of his accomplishments, cemented his legacy as one of the world’s foremost leaders with universal acclaim and respect.

In short he achieved what few ever do - he inspired both his own people and people around the globe.

He now belongs to the ages. May he rest in peace.

In solidarity,
