CUPE Manitoba was proud to participate in Pink Shirt Day (February 26) events at the Manitoba Legislature. Joining with community leaders, the Premier of Manitoba, Minister of Education, and provincial MLAs, CUPE Manitoba representatives signed a 32 by 42 foot quilt created by the Brandon University Anti-Bullying Society. The quilt, which is travelling across Manitoba in an effort to raise awareness in public schools and workplaces on the impact of bullying on our community, already has over 7,000 signatures.

CUPE Manitoba also proudly supports the NDP government’s efforts to confront bullying in every corner of the province. In September 2013, CUPE Manitoba President Kelly Moist spoke at provincial committee hearings in support of Bill 18, legislation enacted by the province to tackle the issue of bullying in Manitoba schools, and in particular to provide a safe place for LGBT students to feel safe and supported. The Manitoba government has also introduced new provincial code of conducts and consequences for bullying incidents, and has provided new educational resources for teachers, parents, and students to help identify and deal with bullying.

CUPE Manitoba is committed to working with the provincial government to continue building on Manitoba’s leadership in addressing bullying at schools, in workplaces, and at home.
