Paul Moist, national president of CUPE, joined community leaders at the University of Winnipeg to launch the Right Her Future – Manitobans Standing with the Women of Panzi Hospital fundraising event in support of women’s’ rights in the Congo.

The Panzi Hospital, lead by Dr. Denis Mukwege, has helped thousands of victims of extreme sexual violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and provided them a safe place to heal both physically and emotionally. The hospital has been in operation since 1999, and continues to be an important institution in the region.

“CUPE members have given us a strong mandate to raise awareness of violence against women, here and around the world,” said Moist.  “We are proud to support the Right Her Future initiative, and applaud the leaders who are working every day to fight against sexual violence on the front lines around the world.”

Moist presented a cheque for $10,000 towards the Right Her Future fundraising initiative to Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, president of the University of Winnipeg, and Darcy Ataman, founder of Make Music Matter.

The fundraising event takes place in Winnipeg at the Pantages Playhouse on Mar. 27, 2014, and features music by Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, and members of Winnipeg’s Congolese Community.
