On September 5th, the NDP announced that it was ending the Supply and Confidence Agreement after the government imposed binding arbitration against rail workers represented by Teamsters. The NDP had made it clear that violating workers’ rights was a red line for the party.

The end of the agreement means a federal election could come before October 2025. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has signaled his intent to eliminate programs and cut investments in public services if he forms the next government. We cannot let this happen.

CUPE will continue to push for policies that improve and expand public services; policies that make Canada a better and more affordable place to live. A place where workers can look with optimism and hope to the future, not with fear and anger. We don’t need another life-long politician representing the wealthy to lead a Harper-style attack on public services.

The next federal election will be crucial to determine whether we will have allies or opponents in government when we push for pro-worker policies. We must support politicians who share our vision, who can help us move forward rather than hold us back.

By electing more New Democrats to the House of Commons, we will have more advocates in Parliament fighting to defend and build on our achievements.
