HURON-PERTH On September 10th, workers from the Perth and Huron Childrens Aid Societies chose the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to represent them.
The vote was conducted by the Ontario Labour Relations Board after the two Societies decided to merge last spring, pitting CUPE against the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). CUPE now represents 70 Childrens Aid Workers, after 40 of 64 ballots were cast in favour of CUPE.
Our campaign focussed on how CUPE will represent and protect our members, and deal with the challenges we all face because of the merger, says Laurel LeBeau, President of CUPE Local 1427. The campaign was conducted with the utmost respect for the unions and workers from both organizations.
While members were happy with their respective unions, the vote was necessary because of a legal requirement, due to the merger of the CAS. CUPE and our members are looking forward to ensuring that workers rights continue to be protected throughout the merger process and beyond, says LeBeau.
