“We are not prepared to watch the corporations of the world sell off our public services. Were here today to tell them theyre not for sale.” Thats the message National President Judy Darcy gave at the send-off of the Canadian Caravan to oppose the World Trade Organization (WTO). The caravan left Toronto November 4 and will travel across Canada, arriving in Seattle later this month.

CUPE is co-sponsoring the caravan along with CUPW, the Canadian Federation of Students, the Sierra Club and other groups. It will stop in 21 cities and five provinces, raising public awareness and concern about the upcoming negotiations at the WTO and the threat they represent to public services. The WTO is pushing for, among other things, a “global free trade zone”.

Well include an itinerary for the caravan in the next issue of FASTFACTS. For more information in the interim, check wtocaravan.org
