Longueuil, Monday, November 11, 2002 -The 600 blue collar workers for the City of Longueuil (CUPE-307) will be attending a general meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss possible pressure tactics. The blue collar workers’ local labour council is already recommending that its members vote in favour of pressure tactics which could go as far as a general indefinite strike. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Samuel de Champlain School at 2101 rue Lavalle002e

The blue collar workers’ exasperation with the authoritarian attitude of the management explains the course suggested by the union body. CUPE accuses the administration of making unilateral decisions, “The management functions as a dictator; it imposes its choices on the employees and does not make any attempt to find solutions that would be acceptable to everyone,” said Serge Pilote, union representative. “Whether it is participating in discussions concerning the application of the integration protocol or on various labour relations committees, the City’s position consistently demonstrates a lack of respect for the employees and their collective agreement,” he added.

If the members vote in favour of pressure tactics, a walkout could take place by early December.

CUPE represents some 70% of all municipal employees in Qub0065c. In addition to the municipalities, CUPE is active in 10 other sectors of activity in Qub0065c including health and social services, education, urban and air transportation, hydroelectricity, government corporations and public organizations in Qub0065c and communications. With close to 100,000 members in Qub0065c, it is the largest FTQ affiliate.
