BARRIE Mediated contract negotiations between Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 255 and the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie broke off yesterday.

Members of the local are considering their options, said CUPE National Representative Jim Keenan. The twenty-three full-time and seven part-time inside/outside workers, including daycare workers and crossing guards, are trying to get a first contract. They have been in a legal strike position since March 31, 2003.

This employer has been foot-dragging since negotiations started, said Keenan. They showed no willingness yesterday to move significantly on their last offer, which was rejected unanimously by the members.
