CUPE has won the run-off vote to represent 190 workers at the Calgary Regional Health Authority.

With Alberta’s reorganization of health care into 17 regions, the Calgary Health Authority merged financial clerks, medical transcribers and purchasers from three CUPE locals and two Alberta Union of Provincial Employee locals into a new facility and a single local.

Prior to the run-off between CUPE and AUPE, CUPE members first had to decide which local they wanted to represent them. Local 182, which had the most attractive collective agreement, was the choice of most of our members.

Then the employer tried to keep Local 182 off the ballot, backing down only when faced with an unfair labour practice complaint.
