Reading Our Rights: Labour and Literacy

Sep 8, 2011 09:53 AM Canada’s largest union is celebrating International Literacy Day with a new project highlighting inspirational stories of workplace literacy. The Reading Our Rights: Labour and Literacy project will invite workers to share their stories of literacy in their lives and of their experiences of labour’s efforts to act on literacy needs and issues. Stories will be featured in videos, displays and an updated edition of the book, A Quest for Learning: The Canadian Labour Movement and Worker Literacy Education. more »

Putting Literacy on the Public Agenda: Briefing package for 2012

Apr 30, 2012 10:14 AM CUPE's advocacy efforts regarding literacy and essential skills have focused on the federal government. However, recent federal changes mean that the provincial governments now have funds to support literacy and essential skills activities in the workplace. There may also be additional support related to English as a second language (ESL) and the integration of internationally trained professionals and other workers into the workplace. The potential for more funding for workplace programs may depend on how well labour and other partners influence the provinces. This package will support our efforts to advocate for programs that meet the needs of our members and for a role for Labour. more »
