(Halifax) – Robert Chisholm, the former leader of the Nova Scotia NDP and Opposition Leader, has been named the new Director for CUPE’s Atlantic Region (Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador).
Chisholm, who returned to CUPE after he left politics in 2003, had been working as a Researcher and then Servicing Representative for the union prior to the appointment.
CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says, “On behalf of CUPE’s 16,000 members in the province, I can truly say that we are excited to have Robert take on this leadership role.
“His lengthy experience in government and proven ability in public life will be a huge asset for us as we fight to improve the lives of working people in Nova Scotia,” says Cavanagh.
CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador President Wayne Lucas, meanwhile, says, ”Robert has a wealth of experience that he brings to the director’s position. His abilities as a consensus-builder are well known. He can also take a great deal of the credit for the unprecedented growth of the NDP in Nova Scotia.
“He will provide a strong voice on labour and social justice issues and I know CUPE members here in Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit greatly from his strong leadership,” says Lucas.
