Supportive housing workers at Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged Inc. have been at the bargaining table for months. Yet there has been little progress in achieving a first collective agreement.

The employer refuses to budge on sick days. It is confusing and unfair to cheer on supportive housing workers during a pandemic, calling them “heroes” yet deny the need for paid sick days in negotiations.. Paid sick days would not just protect staff, but also residents and their families from becoming ill due to the spread of sickness at Villa Colombo.

Part-time workers are just as valuable, and just as at-risk without paid sick days. Illnesses do not discriminate between different hours of work. Stopping the spread means providing paid sick days to everyone.

Like elsewhere in the health care sector, excessive workloads and burnout are commonplace. Nevertheless, the employer is proposing to reduce health benefits. This will result in more stress at work across the board. Combined with the proposed major changes to scheduling, people will be less and less inclined to stay at this crucial care work site.
