CUPE 2614 members, longshore workers at the Port of Quebec, have been locked out for over 20 months. The workers are demanding work-life balance and are fighting back against an employer that wants to carry on forcing them to work 76 hours a week and more.
Despite the lockout, work at the port is carrying on as usual, because the port is using scab labour. CUPE 2614 members have had to watch replacement workers cross their picket lines every day, to do work that is rightfully theirs. With no work stoppage, the employer has no incentive to bargain in good faith.
Good news may be on the horizon. Federal anti-scab legislation passed third reading this week, clearing its final hurdle in the House of Commons. The law will significantly level the playing field for workers’ rights in federally-regulated sectors like communications and transportation.
But until the law passes and takes effect, our fellow CUPE members need your support. Send a message of solidarity to let them know that you stand with them in their fight.
