Petition body
Food Service workers in the Chartwells bargaining unit of CUPE Local 5791 at the University of Regina are being confronted with harmful management decisions that erode their livelihoods and working conditions. These include: • the reduction of working hours • staff cuts • layoff notices sent to all workers over the November class break • lack of attention to health and safety in the workplace • the presence of managers doing work of the bargaining unit Employees in standing positions work without padded mats and some are forced to use unhygienic and/or poorly maintained equipment. At the same, shifts are being shortened, positions are being eliminated, and managers are pushing carts and doing work of the bargaining unit. Many employees are students of the University working hard to pay tuition and make rent while taking classes. Others are longtime employees with years of service to the University. These hardworking employees deserve much better. Chartwells and its parent company Compass have annual profits in the billions of dollars. Shareholder profits should not come at the expense of the dignity and wellbeing of the people who actually do the work. I call on Chartwells, Compass-Canada, and John D Smith, Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) to address these issues and help to restore morale in the workplace by providing satisfactory hours of work and improved working conditions.
