Locals will have to pay less to CUPE national as of April 1, 2005.
According to CUPEs constitution, if the strike fund falls below $15 million, local and provincial unions pay an extra .04% of their average regular monthly wages to CUPE national until the strike fund reaches $25 million.
CUPE estimates that the end of the constitutional levy will leave locals with $6 million more each year to use as they see fit. Coupled with the June 2004 end of the solidarity levy, locals have $12 million more to spend every year.
We have gone from a cash balance of zero to $25 million in the Strike Fund in just over two years, CUPEs national officers Paul Moist and Claude Gnreux said in a letter to locals. During this time we have waged and won important battles on the picket line. And, all of it was possible because of the solidarity that has built a strong and sustained Strike Fund.
