Despite severe snowstorms across the province, between 3000 and 4000 workers gathered in front of Parliament Monday afternoon to denounce the Charest government’s destructive anti-labour policies.
Despite the impact of the snow, which caused several bus companies to refuse commissions, as well as preventing organized carpools, the unions were determined to send their message directly to the government.
By 4:30, the rally had begun. Shortly thereafter, demonstrators removed the barriers separating them from Parliament, and hundreds advanced onto the stairs. FTQ marshals intervened in several cases to calm some of the more militant demonstrators and the rally continued peacefully, and ended around 6:45.
It is worth noting that, unlike previous actions, today’s rally was organized by the six major Quebec labour organizations. In less than two months, Jean Charest has managed to trigger an act of union solidarity on a scale rarely seen in Quebec, as leaders of all six organizations took the podium to denounce the Liberals’ policies.
